Currently the mill produces electricity. Yes, it is a working mill. You can learn how water power, a
renewable natural resource, turns the turbine, and creates electricity. The stream of water that leads from
the dam to the mill, called the head race, which carries the water that turns the mill turbine. A gate controls
the amount of water, from the head race entering the mill. You will note the differing water levels between
the head race and the tail race, which exits the mill. The inside of the Mill is somewhat of a museum. Old
artifacts hang from the beams and adorn the walls. An old “pot belly stove” provides warmth for the building.
We even demonstrate the working of the old grain mill.
Take a photo-tour
of the Mill.
The park is situated on five picturesque acres which includes a branch of the Milwaukee
River, nature trails which end at the dam, head and tail raceways, two fish hatchery ponds
and plants reminiscent of the 1850’s era. The ponds are available for fishing only by
children under 16 and those with disabilities. All ages are welcome to fish in the head race. The upper
pond is sponsored and maintained by the Long Lake Fishing Club and the lower pond was provided by the
Northern Kettle Moraine Crooked Trails Snowmobile Club and is being maintained by the Partners of the Mill
and Park.
